Greyhawk 5e: Wyvern Nests upon the Waterfront
The following document encapsulates my personal take on Greyhawk, and does not follow the canon/lore in various areas. There are no sacred cows i'm not willing to cull.
Elmshire: Halfling City
576 CY, the city of Elmshire has been granted to Bigby after Mordenkainen's coup following the mysterious passing of Greyhawk City's ruler King Arthur Xandrius XII. He is to establish a Magick Academy and Power Plant, in a joint venture with the Fairheight Construction Company's Maegi-Crete System and Deepshire Trading Post's Transport Fleets.
This is one of many recent changes Elmshire has experienced within the past few years as the settlement has finally achieved City Status. Many laws had to be passed, a more formal government needed to be established.
In the end, the settlement opened its borders to non-halflings. A sacred cow was sacrificed, and from it's corpse sprung new life.
The academy was successfully built in a little over a year, with the power plant slowly building out from Bigby's Research Tower. A township was established outside the main City, Farmlands were established to feed the increasing population. Greyhawk City's patrols could reach farther along the coast now, which inspired the Halflings to officiate a 15 mile Radius around the city as Recreational Camping/Hiking Zones.
Wyverns Eggs, Halfling Whimsy and Symbiosis
Wyverns have been designated a Protected Native Species, as they have used the Midbay/Selintan River Mouth/Nyr Dyv Coast as their nesting and birthing grounds for Generations. They create small pockets in the earth on land and in water where they lay their eggs. Each one can take between 4 - 6 months to hatch, whilst emanating heat and purifying the soil/water around them. This creates small pockets of Tropical Zones wherever a High Egg Density occurs.
Each one is at most a little over a quarter mile radius, with the "Tropical" Fauna simply being variants of the Pre-Existing Creatures and Vegetation. The water in these areas also becomes clear and bright in saturation, purer than any Fresh Water existing elsewhere. The halflings of Elmshire use it for Medicinal/Alchemical purposes, and Bigby now uses it in his Power Plants and Laboratories.
Common Vegetation, Fungi, Animal Products in the Elmshire Region
| Name | Type | Usage | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taro Prawn | Animal | Food, Dye, Farming | 3' tall Prawns with thick shells, Deep Plum Color, Aggressive to Non-Halflings |
| Gargantuan Scollvix Berry | Fruit | Alchemical/Food | 1' Large, when ripe it is bright orange and plump like a tomato. Toxic when Raw, in potions it amplifies resistance to elements and in baked goods it satiates hunger for around 4 more hours than the food typically will. |
| Slow - Cooked Wild Taro | Vegetable | Food | Size varies wildly but football sized seems to be the most common. They grow very quickly around Wyvern Eggs and are slowly cooked by the egg's heat until it floats to the surface. 4 of them serve as a Standard Ration. |
| Vilgaxia Root | Plant | Alchemical | The root of a Barbed Vilgaxia Tree, the shavings of which are used as Potion Spice. The powder doubles the length of any potion effect by melting the fat in the arteries and veins (over-use causes the body to start eating itself) |
| Dwarf Beard Tektites | Animal | Food | 2' long Clear bodied, Daddy Longlegs-like creatures that occupy the Frog's role in the Ecosystem. Drowned Dwarf Beard Moss grows on their bodies, helping both creatures navigate the surface of the water. Their eggs are used for False Caviar. |
| Drowned Dwarf Beard Moss | Fungi | Medicinal | Grey to Dark Brown and Black in color, coarse and waterproof. This Fungus resembles moss but releases spores into the water before decaying away. Freshly harvested moss can be ground up and mixed with a small amount of water to form a paste (Sanitizes and Protects Minor Wounds) |
